A fairer deal for older people in Wales

Welsh Labour’s Assembly election pledge to double the capital limit for those going into residential care can make a real difference to the lives of thousands of families across Wales.

At present, one in five people in residential care in Wales are self-funding their care , while 28% of people receiving nursing care are self-funders. Welsh Labour’s pledge to double the capital limit to £50,000 from £24,000 will leave people with £26,000 more of their savings to help them in later life.

This is a great pledge, and shows that Welsh Labour is committed to giving people extra help in their old age – giving a fairer deal to people who have played fair and paid in.

There are over 15,000 people aged over 65 living in either Care or Nursing homes across Wales, including here. As time goes on, self-funding can be an increasing burden. By more than doubling the capital limit to £50,000, thousands of people in Wales will be able to keep more of their hard earned savings to help them meet their needs in later life.
