It was an honour to welcome Peter Hain to Newport this week for a ‘Desert Island Discs’-style evening at Rodney Parade.
Peter talked to former HTV journalist and Caerleon Labour stalwart Max Perkins about his life experiences from childhood onwards – including his fight against the apartheid regime in South Africa, and his time as a Minister in the Labour Governments of Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. In keeping with the Desert Island Discs format, Mr Hain also picked out a series of songs from a wide range of artists – including Tina Turner, Joan Armatrading, Joan Baez, the Manic Street Preachers and Ladysmith Black Mambazo – each of which had a resonance with his personal and political life.
Peter’s lifelong dedication to social justice and equality is an inspiration to us all. I’m very grateful for his support for my Assembly campaign in Newport West.
