I welcome the Welsh Government’s review into the welfare of wild animals in circuses. The independent review will look into whether legislation may be appropriate and if so, the form it might take.
As an animal lover, I share the Welsh Government’s view that there is no place for wild animals in circuses.
It is a great shame that the UK Government and Secretary of State have taken no lead in ensuring action to enforce a legal ban on the use of wild animals in circus entertainment, but I am pleased that the Welsh Government is stepping up talks with organisations across Wales to monitor animal welfare standards in circuses.
I really hope that action will be forthcoming in Wales as soon as possible, and that this can lead to pressure on other national and international administrations to enact a ban.
