Following Carers Rights Day last week, it’s really important that we acknowledge the continuing great work of carers in Newport. Figures from Carers UK show that there are now 17,252 unpaid carers in Newport – an increase of over 12% during the last fifteen years.
Carers UK also calculate that carers make a contribution of around £132 billion to the UK economy each year, sand save the Welsh taxpayer an estimated £8.1 million billion every year.
More people than ever are caring for a loved one. In Newport there are over 17,000 carers who do amazing work every day of the year, often juggling other responsibilities. We must ensure that their enormous contribution to society is not taken for granted or forgotten.
