Time to fight for safer childhoods

I am joining NSPCC Cymru’s fight for safer childhoods and welcome the charity’s call to action ahead of the Assembly election. If elected, I promise to give children in Newport West a voice in the next National Assembly for Wales.

It comes after the NSPCC Cymru children’s charity launched its manifesto ahead of the forthcoming Assembly elections next month.

The charity has set out innovative proposals to ensure Wales is at the forefront of keeping children safe online. These include an Online Safety Action Plan, the creation of an entirely independent Digital Advisory Group, and online safety lessons for children.

As a school governor at a local primary school, I know that the internet is becoming an increasingly invaluable resource and learning tool for children. On the other hand, we now know all too well that the internet is also one of the newest, constantly-changing and fastest-growing threats to keeping our children safe from harm.

In this digital age more must be done to ensure the safety of children online.  The next National Assembly for Wales has an opportunity to take a renewed strategic approach to tackling child abuse and neglect, including leading the way on online safety.
