UK Government fails to back Newport Steel Industry

The UK Government’s steel industry strategy has proven to be a failure following this week’s announcement of job losses at Llanwern Steelworks has proven its failure.

This is a bitter blow to Newport. Steel-making has always played an important part in the economic life of Newport, and has shaped the identity of our city over the years.

The UK Government has not done enough to stand up for the steel industry in the face of sky-high energy costs and stern competition from overseas markets like China. Unfortunately the Conservative Government – so keen to cosset financial fat cats in the City of London – seem less keen to support blue-collar jobs in South Wales.
