Jayne Bryant MS Welcomes Investment to Help Support Unpaid Carers in Newport West
Welsh Government is investing an additional £5.25m to continue the Short Breaks Scheme and Carers Support Fund across Wales. This funding will be available for a further 12 months, until the end of March 2026, providing much needed support for unpaid carers in our community.
Jayne Bryant Member of Senedd for Newport West said: “This continued investment is vital to ensure unpaid carers in Newport have the support they need.”
“Caring for a loved one is a rewarding but demanding role, and it is essential unpaid carers are supported. This Welsh Government investment will help carers in our community to access financial assistance and respite to improve their wellbeing.”
The Short Breaks Scheme provides opportunities for unpaid carers to take a break from their responsibilities. This can include funding for activities including equipment, leisure memberships, and group outings. The scheme is set to deliver 30,000 additional short breaks by March 2025.
The Carers Support Fund offers emergency financial assistance for unpaid carers on low incomes, helping them cover essential costs such as food, household items, or utility bills.
Jayne Bryant MS added: “I know from speaking to constituents that caring responsibilities can leave people feeling very isolated. Raising awareness of carers’ rights and entitlements is so important, as is connecting carers with local support networks and groups in Newport.”
This investment is part of a broader Welsh Government commitment to ensure unpaid carers are supported in every way possible, helping them continue to care without sacrificing their financial or personal wellbeing.
