Small Businesses are the ‘Beating Heart’ of our Community, says Jayne Bryant MS.
Local Welsh Labour MS, Jayne Bryant, is urging residents across Newport to shop locally and support small businesses this festive season.
Saturday December 6th marks Small Business Saturday, a UK-wide grassroots campaign to encourage people to spend their money in small businesses.
The annual event highlights the unique contributions of small businesses and The Welsh Labour Government is committed to delivering for them, investing £22M each year in the Business Wales service, between April 2025 – March 2026.
Reflecting ahead of this year’s Small Business Saturday, Senedd Member for Newport West, Jayne Bryant said: “Representing Newport is a privilege in no small part due to the fantastic small and independent businesses on my doorstep.
“When I’m searching for a candle, jewellery or coffee I know I can pop into places like New Pastures Home, Ty Picl and Oliver’s, anytime.”
If you’re hunting for the perfect festive gift, a present to say thank you this time of year, or a little something for yourself, shopping locally means finding something truly special.
“Newport has homegrown artists selling beautiful work and musicians offering collectable vinyl’s. Every purchase helps support your neighbours, sustain local jobs, and invests in our shared future.”
If you aren’t shopping, just spreading the word about your favourite small businesses, whether in person or online, also goes a long way in championing them too.
It is also important that we are all aware that as the Christmas shopping season intensifies, incidents of abuse towards shop workers sadly tend to rise too. Campaigns including ‘Freedom from Fear’ and ‘ShopKind’ are doing good work and taking a stand for kindness in retail and championing respect for the people who keep our shops running.
Something that is important all year round and especially during the busy festive period.
