Home adaptions supporting safer independent living

The charity  Care & Repair helps older people across Wales adapt, repair, and maintain their homes, enabling them to live independently while reducing hospital admissions. Recently, as Cabinet Secretary for Housing and Local Government, I visited Care & Repair client Gillian Arnold in Pontypool, who had her home adapted after a hospital stay. Rails were fitted throughout her home, allowing her to move safely and regain independence. I was thrilled to meet Gillian and see firsthand how Care & Repair has helped her. These essential services make homes safer, allow people to return home sooner, and reduce stress for families.

Care & Repair supports around 40,000 households every year, improving health and wellbeing and preventing accidents and illness. Last year alone, their work saved the Welsh NHS £24 million through reduced hospital admissions. The charity’s new five-year strategy aims to help even more older people live safely, warm, and accessible lives at home. Services like these are vital in Newport and across Wales, where older residents can benefit from adaptations that keep them independent, connected, and out of hospital.
