Supported Learners with Additional Learning Needs in Newport Â
I was thrilled to visit the Newport campus of Coleg Gwent, where I met staff and learners from the Cwmbran D/deaf Choir and enjoyed their Christmas concert. Deaf learners from Cwmbran High School are part of the Deaf Club at Coleg Gwent, building confidence and transitioning smoothly from school into further education. The college, in partnership with Elite Training, supports learners with work experience, vocational opportunities, and apprenticeships, giving them the skills and confidence they need to move successfully into employment. It’s inspiring to see learners thrive in such an inclusive and supportive environment.Â
Coleg Gwent is deaf-friendly, with staff trained in deaf awareness and learners using hearing aids, cochlear implants, British Sign Language (BSL), or Sign Supported English (SSE). The partnership with Elite ensures learners access work experience and supported apprenticeships while seeing familiar faces to guide them into the world of work. Across Wales, including at Grwp Llandrillo-Menai in North Wales, schools, colleges, and local authorities work together with families and external agencies to support learners with additional learning needs. The ALN system and Curriculum for Wales give educators the flexibility to meet each learner’s individual needs, helping break down barriers and provide excellent opportunities.Â
With over £107 million in revenue funding and £60 million in capital funding invested since 2020, we are improving facilities, infrastructure, and support for learners with ALN. I’m proud that in Newport and across Wales, we are creating an education system where every child and young person can reach their full potential, thrive in learning, and prepare for a successful future.Â
