Supporting Students and Higher Education in Wales

To help more people access higher education and support students facing cost-of-living pressures, the Welsh Government has announced a 1.6% increase to student maintenance support for eligible part-time and full-time undergraduate students from Wales for the 2025–2026 academic year. Support for postgraduate masters and doctoral students, as well as grants for students with dependants or disabilities, will also rise by 1.6%. In addition, £20 million extra funding through Medr will support teaching, research, widening access, and learner support across universities and further education colleges.

The maximum tuition fee for undergraduate students in Wales will increase to £9,535, in line with England, but this will not affect the amount students receive in support, and the partial write-off of student debt up to £1,500 will continue for Welsh students. Minister for Further and Higher Education, Vikki Howells, said: “Living costs should not be a barrier to studying at university. We remain committed to ensuring everyone, no matter their background, can access and participate in higher education, raising skills for the future of the Welsh economy. The small increase in fees will not increase upfront costs for students or their monthly repayments as graduates.”
