Newport remembers victims of the Holocaust

Newport marked Holocaust Memorial Day 2016 with a memorial service at St Woolos Cathedral this morning.

It was a privilege to attend the Memorial Service today. It was a moving service, and a chance to remember the millions of men, women and children murdered by the Nazis, as well as victims of subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.

Within the last year alone, we have seen the slaughter of Yazidis and other minority groups in ISIS-controlled territories, and mass killings of students Kenya and Pakistan. We owe it to the victims of genocides to challenge fascism and oppression wherever we find it.

The involvement of pupils from schools across Newport was an important aspect of the service. Future generations must know about the past and the importance of speaking out against hatred and oppression.
